Heat Pump Water Heating

Hot water heat pumps have been around for many years with the earliest patent being around 1949. Today, new technology has made it possible to produce units with much greater efficiency than solar water heating in New Zealand.
New on the market after several years in development is the Exceed hot water heat pump made specifically for New Zealand conditions by Efficient Heating N.Z. The unit works in a similar way to the kind of heat pump you use to heat your lounge, except the heat generated by the outdoor unit
is transferred into your existing water cylinder.
A normal hot water cylinder heating element can be thought of as having an efficiency of
100%. These units run at up to 300% efficiency over a year, taking into account the different
air temperatures from summer to winter. This means that for every dollar you spend on electricity you will get the benefit of three dollars of heating. When you consider that
30 to 50 % of your power bill is for water heating there are potentially significant savings to be made.
The Exceed unit can provide large quantities of hot water in a relatively short period so are
very suitable for a range of family situations: large families, families with teenagers using a lot of water, or people who just want to save money on their power bills.
The Exceed unit has been designed to retrofit to existing and new water cylinders. This makes the installation of the unit cost effective in comparison to solar water heating which normally requires a new water cylinder.
