A Verified Emission Reduction (VER) is equivalent to one tonne of carbon dioxide that was saved from being emitted into the earth’s atmosphere.

A VER can also be referred to as:

  • An ‘offset’

  • A ‘carbon credit’

  • Or a ‘unit’

VERs are the standard units that are traded on the voluntary carbon market.

The quality of emission reductions varies greatly and is largely controlled by the verification process. Verification should be completed by an independent third party.

The primary role of the verifier is to check that the project methodology has been followed and that the emission reductions claimed are true and accurate.

Energy Mad VERs are verified by Det Norske Veritas.

VERs can be created in a number of different ways. The replacement of fossil fuel fired electricity generation with wind or hydro (renewable) electricity generation is one potential source. Replacing inefficient electrical appliances with energy efficient appliances is another potential source.

Potentially any activity that can be shown to quantifiably reduce the emission of greenhouse gases can be used to create VERs.
